Homeowners and renters may be eligible to claim an Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (EEHIC) for 2023 if they get a home energy audit. New IRS interim guidance provides general requirements for an energy audit. It must be conducted by a certified home energy auditor in a taxpayer’s principal residence located in the United States. After an audit is completed, an auditor must provide the taxpayer with a written report that identifies the most cost-effective improvements and estimates the energy savings of each one. However, a transition rule for 2023 only (through Dec. 31) allows audits to be conducted by noncertified auditors and still qualify for an EEHIC of up to $150.
