The New Jersey Div. of Taxation is warning taxpayers not to be fooled by callers pretending to be state tax collectors. According to the Division, it relies mainly on the mail to make the first contact with individuals about unpaid taxes. You should be suspicious of anyone who contacts you and demands immediate payment for tax debt, threatens you with police action and demands a specific payment method, such as prepaid debit cards. In most cases, the tax collection process will escalate only if the taxpayer doesn’t respond appropriately to mailed notices. You can confirm the Division is trying to contact you by calling (609) 292-6400. Contact us for more information. © 2019
