Tax Breaks for Taxpayer Nonprofit Donations

Many Americans donate to IRS-approved nonprofit organizations they wish to support. If they itemize deductions at tax time, donors may also get a tax break. But if a nonprofit violates tax laws and rules, the IRS may revoke its tax-exempt status and remove it from the list of approved organizations. That means contributions to it are no longer tax-deductible. Suppose you’ve donated to a nonprofit that has just lost its tax-exempt status. Can you still deduct your donations? The IRS says donations made before the effective revocation date are still tax-deductible. Future gifts, however, aren’t deductible unless the nonprofit has regained tax-exempt status.
