For taxpayers who’ve obtained a filing extension for their 2023 federal income tax return, the extended deadline is rapidly approaching: Tuesday, Oct. 15. To be able to file by the deadline, you’ll need to gather Social Security numbers for everyone on your return; bank account and routing numbers for direct deposit; any Forms W-2 and 1099; Form 1095-A (if you have Health Insurance Marketplace insurance); records related to any virtual currency transactions; and supporting documents for credits or deductions you’re claiming. If you’re missing a W-2 or 1099, contact your employer or the issuer immediately. If you can’t obtain these forms in time, it may be possible to file Form 4852 instead.
