Federal Tax Information & it’s Confidentiality

Is your federal tax information (FTI) confidential? Federal tax law permits the IRS to share your FTI with other entities such as state and local tax agencies. Safeguards are in place against the misuse of the data, including required reporting and penalties for violations. Recently, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) looked at how well the safeguards are working. Using 2022 data, TIGTA found that only 54% of states timely filed required reports, 41% filed late, and 5% didn’t file. The most common data incidents included sending FTI to the wrong taxpayer, unauthorized access to FTI and emailing mistakes.
